Meet Our Founder of Boholodo

Hi, i'm Xuan Hung Le. Born and raised in the Vietnamese countryside, where traditional bamboo and rattan craftsmanship is deeply rooted, I grew up witnessing the challenges artisans face - from harvesting spiky, tough materials to transforming them into everyday items. The thorns of rattan and bamboo often leave scratches on the farmers' hands, but their dedication and resilience became a great source of inspiration for us.

This journey sparked a strong desire in me to help bring these humble yet beautiful creations to the world. Our biggest challenge has always been preserving the cultural soul of the craft village while innovating practical, modern products. That's why we founded the brand Boholodo - to honor tradition while creating something truly useful.

Our Natural Materials

Sourcing our rattan and bamboo is an arduous and often perilous process. Our local collectors must venture into deep, dense forests to harvest these plants. The rattan and bamboo stalks are covered in thorns and have sharp edges; without great care, one can easily sustain painful scratches.

The water hyacinth harvest is no less demanding. Farmers wade for hours in canals and rivers, gathering the plants by hand, bundle by bundle.

Once harvested, all these raw materials must be meticulously dried and treated before they can be transformed into the beautiful products we offer.

The Art of the Handmade

Every coaster set, every rectangular tray, every cute bag, and every placemat is the result of patient hours of meticulous, manual craftsmanship. No two products are exactly alike. Each weave, each piece of inlay is utterly unique, unlike items produced on a machine-driven assembly line. It’s as if it was made just for you.

Our products are more than just objects; they are a piece of the village's soul. We believe that when you touch a rattan tissue box, you are also touching a story -  a story of patience, passion, and meticulous care.

The story behind the natural materials that create the products

Bamboo

Bamboo

Bamboo often grows in the hamlets in the Vietnamese countryside. The bamboo stalk is about 16ft tall and can be even taller; it has a hollow center, connected by nodes in the middle which help the stalk stay strong and grow tall. Because of this characteristic of bamboo, people came up with the idea to make household items from bamboo wood. There is a very good story about bamboo: it takes 5 years to establish deep roots in the ground, during which time it is only about 7-10 inches tall, but it only takes 1 year for it to reach a height of 16ft. The meaning of this story is that your process of preparation, refinement, and learning seems very silent, but when the opportunity comes, you will fly very high and very far. Therefore, focus on pursuing your ideals, even if the work you are doing is unseen and unknown by anyone.

Rattan

Rattan

In many rural areas of Vietnam, rattan plants grow deep in the forest, often growing wildly into large, messy bushes that stretch tall and long, surrounded by sharp thorns. Harvesters must navigate through the dense forest, go into the rattan bushes, and face scratches on their hands and feet. But it is precisely this "thorny" characteristic that creates a supple and sturdy material. Because of its durable, flexible, and pliable properties, people came up with the idea of weaving rattan into useful household items: from trays, tissue boxes, to coasters. Each strand of rattan not only connects the living space but also tells a story of the diligence, creativity, and traditional identity of the craft villagers.

Mother of pearl

Mother of pearl

Mother-of-pearl inlay uses natural seashell and oyster shells to attach to the product's surface, creating a unique, sparkling iridescent effect. Those tiny shell pieces are ground, cut, and attached by hand piece by piece, a meticulous process that demands dexterity and patience. Each inlaid rattan tray and coaster bearing inlay details represents an intersection between nature and skillful hands. No two products are alike, because each shell pattern is unique, like a personal signature of the owner who possesses it. From a raw material from the seabed, mother-of-pearl inlay brings a non-mass-produced beauty, making the living space become elegant and subtly outstanding.

Water hyacinth

Water hyacinth

Water hyacinth is a plant that floats on the rivers in the Vietnamese countryside—seemingly useless, but it is a wonderful material to create exquisite handmade products. To harvest the hyacinth, artisans must soak themselves in the water for hours, cut each plant, dry them in the sun, and treat them meticulously before weaving. Thanks to its soft, light, and easy-to-shape texture, water hyacinth becomes an ideal material for weaving products such as handbags or decorative placemats. Each hyacinth fiber carries the breath of nature, creating a rustic, intimate beauty that is no less aesthetic.
